It appears the nightmare is finally over. Everything is finally back to normal.
I am still waiting on DreamHost to answer my questions about preventing another fiasco like this in the future, but in the meantime, I've decided it's just best to disable my /incoming directories. At this point, it's a minor inconvenience to avoid having this happen again.

maybe you should read their help section first. dreamhost has been nothing bad for me they've been excellent, they've answered my questions they've held my hand they've bent over backwards.
maybe you're just an asshole.
You got off pretty lightly: one of my old hosts, Web-Mania, managed a critical hardware failure resulting in a weeks downtime followed by the restoration of a backup made six months before the crash. :)
Lesson of the day: Don't leave vulnerable scripts on your account where people can turn it into a warez site... and you probably won't get shut down.
